The Vestmannaeyjar Islands are an archipelago south of Iceland , consisting of 15 islands and about 30 islets and cays . The southernmost island is Surtsey and the northernmost is Elliðaey . Heimaey is the largest of the islands and the only one that is inhabited, and is home to Vestmannaeyjarbær with a population of about 4,639 (2024).
